I was Nanaimo's Poet Laureate from 2017–2020. In honour of the work of the laureate, the city has designated sidewalk space outside the Port Theatre for poems. Each laureate has a space to call their own for a poem. We had the added challenge of making the poem six lines or less. This is mine and it’s called “Advice to the Poet.”
